Going back to the XVI century, there’s one particular staircase design that drastically influenced designs that came in the future: Michelangelo’s staircase at the Laurentian Library at Florence. Such mannerist masterpiece was one of a kind for its time thanks to its ambitious spatial scale at an interior space. That open, grandiose design inspired the later dramatic baroque- style interior staircases.
This architectural feature can play many roles other than allowing people to move around different heights.
Our selection of this week’s staircases did more than their expected purpose. Amongst them, they could: 1- Work as the main component that organises the space and volume of an area. 2- Act as a breeding ground for social interactions, meeting points and communal lounge areas. 3- Function as a display device for three-dimensional small objects like sculptural pieces and ceramic vases. 4- Provide an intimate pathway that links two places in a sophisticated tasteful way. 5- Guide visitors through the inside and outside of a hotel, leading them to the best-framed landscape contemplative areas that surround it.
Can you identify these staircases below?
