Neutral tones, if strictly defined, are known as those that are not in the colour wheel (primary and secondary colours). This includes beige, brown, grey, white, taupe, and so on. However, if we are talking about a neutral palette, these tones often include underlying muted colours , and it’s still considered a neutral palette because there’s no saturation.
Although these combinations are often used in interior design because it’s fairly easy to create a calm atmosphere when the colours aren’t screaming, it’s not easy to add depth and interest to the room. Of course the room will seem “calm” if everything is beige and white, but great interior designers elevate those tones and transform them into something new and exciting.
Today we selected five projects that included these colours in their design with subtle genious. Notice how mindful everything is selected and placed. There’s interesting textures, contrasting shapes, muted colourblocking, unusual materials, tasteful art pieces and bold overall compositions.
