Going back to the XVI century, there’s one particular staircase design that drastically influenced designs that came in the future: Michelangelo’s staircase at the Laurentian Library at Florence. Such mannerist masterpiece was one of a kind for its time thanks to its ambitious spatial scale at an interior space. That open, grandiose design inspired the later dramatic baroque- style interior staircases.
This architectural feature can play many roles other than allowing people to move around different heights.
Our selection of this week’s staircases did more than their expected purpose.
