Did you know that bamboo can grow up to 90 centimetres in just a day? You could just watch it grow without the need of a sped-up video and still notice the changes. When designing a new project the selection of construction materials is one of the main elements that define the project’s carbon footprint. Bamboo has a lot to offer. Apart from being objectively gorgeous, it’s resistant, flexible and it grows super fast (making it more eco-friendly than most materials out there).
Bamboo has impecable tensile strength. In terms of strength to weight ratio is similar to timber, only timber takes around twenty years to grow completely before harvest, while bamboo takes around four years until it’s good for construction (and just two for furniture). This material has a rich cultural history too. It is associated with traditional building techniques from South Asia, East Asia, the South Pacific, Central and South America. This week we selected five projects with an exquisite use of this insurging material. From poligonal triangular structures in idyllic natural settings to curvy and dynamic circuits of flexed bamboo that run through the entire hotel, these projects create architectural and interior masterpieces without compromising on ecological reponsibility.
